UCS Wrestlers Go to State
All six of the UCS varsity wrestlers qualified to compete at the state level with the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA). Zach Chesnut (152 weight class), a senior, placed 4th. Jacob Stepp (220), a junior, placed 6th. Both Nick Fingerle (145), a senior, and John Patrick Popham (126), a junior, placed 7th. Noah Bielstein (106), a freshman, also finished very well. Colin Howard (285), a freshman, was unable to compete due to illness, but made the trek to Macon along with our middle school wrestlers, Joel Popham and Collin Espy, to support their team mates. Also in attendance was 2010 UCS graduate Luke Lansdell who currently wrestles for Shorter University and who placed 2nd in state his senior year.
The state finals are two days of intense wrestling matches in which each wrestler defends his seeding through a process of double elimination. One loss results in 3rd place becoming the highest possible placement. A wrestler must then compete victoriously in four or more matches in order to obtain the 3rd place medal. It takes conditioning, strength, determination, skill, and wisdom to defeat the opponent. Wrestling is for the strong of heart!
Through their ability, Christ-like attitude, and the respect shown to opponents and opposing coaches, our wrestlers represented Unity well! Thanks go out to Coach Honore’ and Coach Joe for a successful wrestling season.
